Streaming has become our collective group therapy. Even though we’re mostly isolated at home, there’s lots of social discussion and memes about what we’re binge watching in quarantine. I’m talking about you, Tiger King.
Streaming is up 50 to 70 percent, according to Forbes. That’s a lot of strain on the internet, but we can’t stop watching. We’re so lucky to be living in this age of constant entertainment while we’re stuck inside. (For those of you who need to be at work, I hope you stay safe and healthy.)
I’ve been catching up on series, checking out some new-to-me shows, and rewatching all the Marvel movies. I really wish Disney+ would release The Rise of Skywalker early, like it did for Onward. So until I start my next Star Wars marathon, here’s what I’ve been watching.
Star Wars Resistance
I’ve tried a few times to get into this show, so I decided to give it another go. I love the Clone Wars and Rebels so much, but this show didn’t have that feel. This series is set around the time of Episode XII. The characters – including some Rebel spies – are based on a waystation where Poe Dameron and BB-8 pop in. It took awhile, but after a few episodes it got so good. I couldn’t stop watching. The characters develop, the mysteries grow, and the risks get higher for Kazuda Xiono and his friends. (Disney Channel, Disney+)
Curb Your Enthusiasm
I didn’t realize how much I missed Larry David. I hadn’t seen the last two seasons of the show and I can’t believe I missed Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Fatwa musical. Get spurned in a store? Open a revenge shop. This show just makes me laugh so hard. (HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now)
Avenue 5
This is a great space comedy brought to you by the creator of Veep. It’s awkward, inappropriate and so ridiculous. Avenue 5 is a space cruise and because of some crazy circumstances the passengers led by their Captain Hugh Laurie are stuck in space. And things just keep getting worse.
Derry Girls
Derry Girls goes back to Ireland in the 90s. Instead of saying a person swears like a sailor or a truck driver, we should say he curses like an Irish school girl. This crew is fast talking and hilarious. They’re always scheming on how to meet boys or get some extra money. Their families are also insane.
Star Trek: Picard
I love Star Trek but haven’t wanted to pay to watch anything on CBS All Access. Too many subscriptions, yo. But it’s free for a month so I’m going to catch up on all the Trek. My mom and I started with Picard. Patrick Stewart is just so good. Picard is retired now but he has a new mission and a new crew. So much good stuff about Star Trek’s original theme of acceptance.
After those 10 episodes, we just started on Discovery, and we’re impressed at how it still feels so very true to Star Trek. They’ve updated tech, visuals, language, but they’re still in the same universe with the same themes. Sonequa Martin-Green is great as Michael Bernam. I don’t trust that Jason Issacs as a captain. He’s a Slytherin after all. (CBS All Access)
More of my quarantine binge watching list
● Little Fires Everywhere: Incredible performances by Kerry Washgingon & Reese Witherspoon. Holds up really well compared to book. (Hulu)
● Marvel’s Runaways: Catching up on the latest season (Disney+)
● Blinded by the Light: Awesome Springsteen-inspired movie (HBO)
● Yesterday: Beatles-inspired movie that I didn’t like as much as Blinded. (HBO)

● The Black Cauldron: So weird and creepy. (Disney+)
● Ducktales: The new series – woohoo (Disney+)
● LEGO Masters: These builders are amazing. (Fox, Hulu)
